IS VOGUE ITALIA RACIST? Its “Haute Mess” Story Features African-American Stereotypes

A spread from Vogue Italia's "Haute Mess" pictorial. (Stephen Meisel for Vogue Italia)

Fashion magazines have long been accused of being discriminatory against people of color, so the latest controversey isn’t too much of a surprise.

The new issue of Vogue Italia features a pictorial shot by celeb shutterbug Steven Meisel, and the theme is supposed to be a take on the notion of “Ghetto Fabulous.” (SEE PHOTOS BELOW) But did they took it far, with its depiction of over-the-top ensembles, wild weaves, extra long fingernails, and baby carriage-pushing women.

Vibe magazine published its opinion on the spread: “I will give Vogue Italia the benefit of the doubt that it was not their intention to be racist or offend anyone, but let’s keep it real for a minute: How many white girls [or any other ethnic backgrounds for that matter] do you know that dress or look like this? Exactly. Racist may be a little harsh of a word to describe this editorial , but it was definitely done in poor taste and judgement. Fashion is about being creative, pushing boundaries, and being expressive. Steven Meisel and Vogue Italia failed miserably at achieving these goals.”

Rebecca Taylor held her fall 2012 fashion show at the Stage at Lincoln Center on Friday, with an eclectic celeb mix of reality TV stars and rock royalty.

The City‘s Olivia Palmero sat front row, flanked by her co-star Louise Roe and Zoe Kravitz (without beau Penn Badgely).

Rebecca Taylor’s fall collection says the collection is  “comprised of sensual fabrics tailored into easy, modern silhouettes.  The color palette is saturated with rich mercurial hues, accented with sequins and studs highlighting the feminine form.  Abstract prints are enhanced with digital manipulation.  All in all, a rich, layered, representation of casual luxury.”

FASHION WEEK PHOTOS: Front Row At Diet Pepsi Style Studio…Debra Messing, Mary-Kate Olsen & More

Yes, Diet Pepsi and Fashion Week do indeed mix well together!

At Lincoln Center’s The Box Thursday night, the Diet Pepsi Style Studio Fashion Show was held, presented by Simon Doonan (Barneys New York’s “Creative Ambassador-At-Large”) with stage design by his partner, home design guru Jonathan Adler. The runway and front rows were created by placing a slab of material over a series of stacked Pepsi cans, while fabric lanterns above were covered in a stylized Pepsi logo. A pair of bars at opposite ends served champagne — and, of course, Diet Pepsi served with the cutest straws covered in Pepsi logos.

Who was in the front row? Mary-Kate Olsen (unlike the previous night, sister Ashley didn’t join), Debra Messing, Kristin Chenoweth, Kelly Rutherford, Food Network‘s Sandra Lee, Angela Simmons, Jay Manuel, America’s Next Top Model‘s Jay Alexander, GCB‘s Jennifer Aspen, and Jonathan Cheban, who’s launching his own menswear collection during Fashion week. Fashion week regulars Marjorie Gubelman and Fern Mallis also attended.

Diet Pepsi teamed up with Doonan, the show’s director and curator, and gave four up-and-coming designers the opportunity to present their collections. The show featured three themed fall looks from each designer “with their unique hometown perspective,” according to organizers. Some pieces with metallic finishes were inspired by the long-and-lean Diet Pepsi can.

Check out the photos below of Debra Messing with Jonathan Adler, Jonathan Cheban and Angela Simmons, Kristin Chenoweth flanked by Kelly Rutherford and Jennifer Aspen, Kristen and Jennifer, and Mary-Kate Olsen with Simon Doonan.
